Kids Playing in Splash Pad

Summer in the Charlotte Metro area is beautiful, but keeping a house full of kids entertained for three months can easily drain your wallet. Fortunately, you don't have to spend a fortune to make memories. Between Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties, our region is packed with free splash pads, dollar movie programs, reading rewards, and "Kids Eat Free" restaurant deals.

Grab your calendar and sunscreen—here is your ultimate guide to surviving and thriving this summer on a budget!

FREE & CHEAP SUMMER ACTIVITIES

1. Splash Pads & Parks

When the Carolina heat kicks in, water play is a necessity. Luckily, both counties offer fantastic free options:

Mecklenburg County: First Ward Park and The Green in Uptown Charlotte feature great, interactive fountains for kids to run through. If you want a full day park experience, head to Freedom Park or Latta Nature Preserve for free playground access and shaded walking trails.

Cabarrus County: Village Park in Kannapolis is a crown jewel for budget-conscious parents. It features an awesome splash pad (just $1.50 per person!). While you're there, you can ride the historic carousel or the miniature train for just $1.50 per ticket. If you want 100% free, head over to the Harrisburg Park Splash Pad, which features fun tipping buckets and ground nozzles.

Union County: You don't have to look far for water play in Union County! Head over to Crooked Creek Park in Indian Trail for a massive, free daily splash pad featuring tons of ground sprayers (just note they are closed Tuesdays for maintenance). Another premier spot is the newly built splash pad at Belk Tonawanda Park in downtown Monroe, which features fantastic interactive fountains and a great playground. For a unique twist, Downtown Waxhaw Park offers an all-natural, interactive stream-style water feature perfect for wading and cooling off little feet.

2. $1 and $2 Summer Movie Express

Beat the midday heat with cheap theater popcorn and a movie.

Regal Cinemas (Multiple locations across the Metro, including Concord Mills): Regal runs its famous Summer Movie Express on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can get $1 or $2 tickets for kid-friendly favorites (like Despicable Me and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), usually during morning showtimes.

AMC Theatres (Uptown & Concord): Keep an eye on AMC’s Summer Movie Camp, which offers deeply discounted kid movie tickets throughout June, July, and August.

3. Library Magic & Summer Reading Challenges

Library systems go all out for summer. They are entirely free, fully air-conditioned, and feature special performances.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (ImaginOn & Branches): ImaginOn in Uptown is an incredible, free, youth-centric library space. Throughout the summer, branches across Mecklenburg host "Summer Break" kickoff carnivals, live magic shows, and DIY craft hours (like Galaxy Slime making).

Cabarrus County Public Library (Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Midland):Cabarrus libraries feature excellent summer reading events. You can regularly catch free community events like the Charlotte Hornets Book Bus visiting the Harrisburg Library, or Rockstar Magic shows at the Kannapolis and Midland branches. Plus, kids earn free prizes just for logging their reading hours!

4. Kids Bowl Free All Summer

Did you know your kids can bowl for free every single day?

Through the national Kids Bowl Free program, registered children get two free games of bowling daily all summer long.

Local participating alleys often include lanes in Charlotte, Huntersville, and Concord. (Note: Shoe rental is usually not included, but you can buy a cheap family pass for the summer to cover adult bowling or shoe costs).
